10 Subscription Boxes to Try This Year

I have been having this weird obsession with subscription boxes lately. I’m not exactly sure what about it has me so intrigued. Maybe it’s the surprise factor. Maybe it’s the package in the mail thing. Or maybe it’s a combination of the two.

The point is, I am so curious about them, that I’ve decided to do some research and try 10 subscription boxes this year. Before you freak out, I don’t mean 10 all at the same time. I mean one per month till the end of the year.

Consider it a trial run. I’ll be reviewing the whole thing – the ordering process, packaging, products, unsubscription process, and, if it goes there, customer service as well.

Not going to lie, the unsubscribing part seems daunting knowing how complicated that process can get with certain companies, but for the sake of this research project of mine, I think I’m up for it. Haha.

Now, for the subscription list. I tried picking subscription boxes for a variety of product categories to shake things up and have some comparison. I have them listed alphabetically here, but that’s not to say that I’ll follow this order for the next several months.

Birch Box is a common one that I’m sure most people have heard of if they aren’t actually familiar with it. Birch Box delivers beauty products (I hate referring to them as beauty products because I don’t believe that products are what make people beautiful, BUT for the sake of easily explaining, I decided to roll with it.)

What you get:

  • 5 beauty samples a month for $10

club w

Wine! I’m not a huge wine drinker, but I’m open to the idea of refining my palate with some wine, especially if it’s personalized to my preferences.

what you get:

  • 3 bottles a month for $39 + $6 Flat Rate Shipping (if you buy 4 bottles, they cover shipping)

foot cardigan

I love socks. I’ve been a huge fan of fun socks since high school. I remember I used to “spice up” my school uniform with bright, patterned knee-high socks. It was my M.O., if you will. And because I also love shoes/sneakers, it makes sense to give this a try so I can show of my socks AND shoes. Haha.

what you get:

1 pair a month for $9

Snacks! Because obviously. Who doesn’t love snacks? I thought this would be a great one to choose. I’ve tried Nature Box before through work, so I thought I’d give a different company a shot. I think Melvin and I will both enjoy this.

  • 8 snacks a month for $11.99

I’ve subscribed to Julep before, but I thought it’d give it another try. I’ll either save this to the the middle or end of this year though since I’ve had some experience with them. Instead of mainly nail polish, I thought I’d give some of their makeup a try one of these months, so we’ll see how that goes.

  • My Maven Box: $40+ worth of polish & product for $24.99 a month (or $19.99/month with 3-month pre-paid subscription)
  • Maven Luxe Box: $60+ worth of prestige products for $39.99 a month (or $34.99/month with a 3-month pre-paid subscription)

nerd block

I wouldn’t consider myself the biggest nerd, but you know… I can be nerdy about some things. With different themes to choose from (horror, comic, arcade, etc), I’d receive exclusive merchandise, collectibles, and quality name brand items.

what you get:

  • A set of themed items for $13.99 or $19.99 (depending on the theme)

olive box

Paper & lifestyle products! I’ll always have a soft-spot for stationery products, so this was a must-have in my list. I’ve been subscribed to their email list for a while now, so I thought it only fitting to add them on here.

what you get:

  • Lifestyle Olivebox for $25 a month
  • Card Box (organized by theme) for $25 per bi-monthly box
  • Single Box (no membership required) for $35 a box

This one is about the jewelry. There were several ones I could choose from, but I liked that when you subscribe to them, 10% of proceeds go towards one of 5 charities (Unicef, Polaris Project, Charity: Water, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and American Veterinary Medical Foundation).

what you get:

  • 3+ pieces of jewelry a month for $20 (Bargain Box)
  • 4+ pieces of jewelry a month for $30 (Trend Setter Box)

Clothes! I have a friend who’s subscribed to Stitch Fix, and she says she likes it a lot, so I decided to give this a try. I rarely go shopping for clothes, but when I do, I normally come home with like 7-8 items. This would be a nice change and an interesting experiment to see what kinds of items a personal stylist would suggest for me based on my preferences.

  • 5 personalized pieces for a styling fee of $20+ – you keep and pay for what you love and send back the rest (the $20 styling fee is used towards your final purchase); (read: it’ $20+ dollars depending on what pieces you want to keep/buy)

the bookish box

I love this idea. Being a bookish person myself, I couldn’t help but make sure I had a book-related subscription box in my list.

What you get:

  • A shirt and 3-5 feminine home, beauty, and fashion items starting at $29.99

Now, since the cutoff date for March subscriptions are coming up soon, I’ve gone ahead and decided on one for next month. I’ll be going with Stitch Fix next month, so we’ll see how that goes!

Any of these subscriptions sound exciting to you? Which ones would you do / have you done? Any additional ones you’d recommend that aren’t listed here? I look forward to hearing your opinions!
